Launch Free Terminal →Volume Weighted Average Price is one of the most respected institutional reference levels. Large funds use VWAP as a benchmark for execution quality. Algorithmic execution systems are designed to fill orders at or better than VWAP. When price deviates significantly from VWAP, institutional algorithms often push it back.
Standard VWAP resets daily. But the crypto market operates across three major sessions that each bring different liquidity characteristics: the Asia session starting around 01:00 UTC, the London session starting at 08:00 UTC, and the New York session starting at 13:30 UTC.
Session-anchored VWAPs create a separate VWAP for each of these sessions. This reveals where each session's participants have priced fair value, and how the current price relates to each group's average entry.
When price trades above all three session VWAPs, the market has strong bullish structure. Every major session's participants are in profit, and there is no natural selling pressure from underwater positions. This is one of the clearest bullish confirmation signals in orderflow analysis.
When price drops below the most recent session VWAP but holds above the previous one, you have a short-term pullback within a broader uptrend. The current session is underwater but the trend session is still profitable. This often creates a buying opportunity at the previous session VWAP level.
When price trades below all three VWAPs, bearish structure dominates. Every session is underwater and the natural tendency is for participants to exit at break-even, creating selling pressure at each VWAP level above.
A practical strategy using session VWAP works as follows. Identify the trend by checking price position relative to all three VWAPs. Look for entries at session VWAP levels during pullbacks in the direction of the trend. Use the next session VWAP as a reference for stops since a break below it signals the pullback is becoming a reversal.
