Fed Hike Dissent Lifts December Odds to 82.6% While Bitcoin Funding Cools — Published by Buildix, a crypto orderflow analytics platform with real-time VPIN, CVD and whale tracking on the 100 most liquid Hyperliquid pairs.

The Federal Reserve held its range at 3.75% to 4% on October 28, but two policymakers voted for a hike, and December hike odds climbed to 82.6% from 78.3% a day earlier, according to Unchained, citing CME FedWatch figures reported by Fox Business. Bitcoin perps and options barely reacted in the first hours. The repricing came overnight instead: by early October 29, BTC was back under $80,000 and 24-hour liquidations had reached $395.92 million, per CoinGlass data cited by Crypto News Australia.

The Fed Hike Dissent and What Changed in the Statement

The vote was 10 to 2. Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack wanted a quarter point to 4% to 4.25%, as reported by CryptoTicker. This follows a September hike that was the first increase since 2023, according to Bitcoin Foundation News.

The statement upgraded economic activity from "solid" to "strong," per the same Bitcoin Foundation report, and still described inflation as elevated. Annual CPI ran at 3.7% in September, per Unchained. Interest on reserve balances was set at 3.90% from October 29, per CryptoTicker, which is the risk-free hurdle every basis trade and every funding-rate carry now has to beat.

The hawkish camp is not new. In July the Fed held at 3.50% to 3.75% on a 9 to 3 vote, with Hammack, Neel Kashkari and Lorie Logan all favoring a hike, per Bitcoin Foundation News. Going into this meeting, CME FedWatch showed about 90% odds of no change, so the hold itself was priced. The dissent count and the upgraded language were the new information. On the liquidity side, CryptoTicker reported that the New York Fed will keep reserves ample by buying Treasury bills, and government securities with up to three years to maturity if needed, which takes some edge off the tightening read.

In plain terms, a pause with two hike votes is not a dovish hold. The market read it that way too: odds of a December move went up, not down.

Bitcoin Funding Rate and DVOL Through the Decision

The derivatives tape around the 2 p.m. ET release was quiet. Unchained logged Deribit's DVOL at 37.59 at 2 p.m. and 37.58 at 4:45 p.m., with a full range of 37.22 to 37.63. That level implies a daily move of about 2%.

Spot followed the same script. BTC on Coinbase went from $80,763 at 2 p.m. to $81,027 at 4:45 p.m., a 0.33% gain, with a first-hour range of $80,600 to $81,234. Ether moved from $2,342 to $2,351.

The Bitcoin funding rate on Deribit perps eased to 0.0058% per 8 hours at 4 p.m. ET from 0.0074% at 2 p.m., per Unchained. Funding falling while price ticks up is the signature of longs trimming into strength rather than chasing. Nobody was paying up for upside on a hawkish hold.

Why Bitcoin Fell Below $80K After the Fed

The move that mattered came after the US close. Crypto News Australia put BTC at $79,735 early on October 29, down 1.6% on the day and 3.5% on the week, after it briefly held above $81,000 post-decision. ETH was at $2,302, down 2.4% on the day. Brave New Coin had BTC at $79,732 at 03:34 UTC.

Rates were the backdrop. The US 10-year yield sat around 5.03% after the announcement, per Crypto News Australia. Total 24-hour liquidations of $395.92 million included only $52.04 million of Bitcoin longs, so the bulk of the forced closes hit other positions.

Two Glassnode reference levels frame the current range, both cited by Crypto News Australia from the Week 43 report. Binance bids have stacked between $78,000 and $79,000, with about $42 million resting there. The average cost basis of US spot Bitcoin ETFs is about $81,500, so the post-Fed retreat put ETF holders back below water.

That is a notable split, because ETF flows were positive into the meeting: $110 million on October 26 and $176 million on October 27, per Bitcoin Foundation News.

Orderflow Levels for the December FOMC Window

The calendar is now set. The October jobs report lands November 6, October CPI on November 10, and the next FOMC on December 8 to 9 with new projections, per Bitcoin Foundation News. With hike odds above 80%, each print is a chance to move that probability, and the past 24 hours showed the market does its repricing on the follow-through, not on the headline minute.

For a trader reading orderflow, three things are worth tracking:

  1. The $78,000 to $79,000 bid block. If price trades into it and aggressive sell volume keeps printing while the bids get pulled, the support was spoofed. If bids absorb sells and CVD flattens, it is real demand.
  2. Funding versus price. Funding staying near zero on a drop means shorts are not crowding yet. Funding turning negative while price holds is the setup for a squeeze back toward the $81,500 ETF cost basis.
  3. DVOL versus macro odds. A 37 handle on DVOL with hike odds at 82.6% says options are not paying for a hawkish surprise. A jump in DVOL ahead of November 10 would be the first sign that has changed.
  4. The Buildix liquidation map and BTC pair view put CVD, order book imbalance and liquidation clusters on one screen, which is where the $78K bid block and the $81.5K cost basis can be watched together. Earlier this week, Glassnode flagged Hyperliquid whales turning net short into this meeting. So far, the overnight tape is on their side.

The Fed did not move on October 28. Two of its members wanted to, and the bond market listened. Bitcoin's options desk has not caught up yet.
