Hyperliquid Whales Net Short Bitcoin for the First Time Since March, Right Into the Fed — Published by Buildix, a crypto orderflow analytics platform with real-time VPIN, CVD and whale tracking on the 100 most liquid Hyperliquid pairs.

Large Bitcoin traders on Hyperliquid have flipped net short for the first time since March, according to a Glassnode post on October 27 reported by crypto.news. The flip landed with BTC trading near $80,000 and one day before the Federal Reserve's October 28 policy decision. The same cohort had been positioned long near the bottom and turned bearish the week before, per Crypto Briefing on TradingView.

That matters for orderflow traders for one reason: Hyperliquid positions are public. When the largest accounts on a transparent venue sit on the same side going into a scheduled macro event, the liquidation map stops being abstract.

What Glassnode Said About Hyperliquid Whales Going Net Short

The headline line is short. Glassnode wrote that "Hyperliquid whales are net short bitcoin:native for the first time since March," as quoted by Crypto Economy. The cohort is large accounts on the native BTC perp, not the market as a whole.

Glassnode did not frame the flip as a forecast. In crypto.news coverage, the firm laid out two outcomes: these traders are positioning for a deeper pullback, or they get caught if Bitcoin rebounds and shorts are forced to cover. Both readings are live, and the tape decides between them.

Context helps. A whale cohort that bought the low and then reversed is not the same as a crowd that has been short the whole way down. The first group has shown timing. The second usually supplies fuel.

Bitcoin Liquidation Levels: $79,600 Below, $85,000 and $87,000 Above

Glassnode's October 21 report, titled "Swept and Refilled," mapped where forced flow sits. According to crypto.news, the largest modeled liquidation clusters were near $85,000 and $87,000, after a band around $80,000 was cleared on October 15. A liquidation band near $79,600 sat below the market.

The same report found a block of spot sell orders between $86,500 and $87,500, and an average cost basis for 6 to 12 month buyers near $86,700. The True Market Mean sat around $77,600 on the report's cutoff date, per Crypto Economy.

Put those together and the structure looks asymmetric. Above spot, short liquidations near $85,000 and $87,000 would run into spot supply from holders getting back to breakeven around $86,700. Below spot, the $79,600 band is close, and under it the next structural reference is the $77,600 mean. A squeeze has fuel but meets sellers. A flush has a short path to its first target.

How Hyperliquid Funding Sets the Cost of Holding Shorts

Being net short on Hyperliquid carries a cost or an income, and it settles every hour. Per the Hyperliquid funding mechanics summarized by crypto.news, funding settles hourly even though the rate is quoted on an eight hour basis. The interest component is 0.01% per eight hours, or 0.00125% per hour, plus a premium component based on the gap between the perp and spot.

Premium prices are sampled every five seconds and averaged over the hour, and each hourly payment uses one eighth of the eight hour rate. The oracle that anchors it is a weighted median of centralized exchange spot prices, weighted by each exchange's liquidity.

The practical read: if shorts get crowded enough to push the perp below the oracle, funding turns negative and shorts start paying longs every hour. A whale cohort can hold a short through one Fed day cheaply. Holding it through a week of negative funding while price chops is a different trade, and that is usually when covering starts.

The margin math adds a second clock. Hyperliquid's margin tiers documentation sets BTC at a 40x maximum for positions up to $150M notional and 20x above that, with maintenance margin at half the initial margin: 1.25% and 2.5% respectively. Whale positions above $150M sit in the stricter tier, which narrows the distance between entry and forced exit.

Wintermute Flows and the Other Side of the Book

The spot side tells a different story. Lookonchain tracked 9,458 BTC, about $771.5 million, withdrawn from Wintermute to 40 newly created wallets since October 1, and described the pattern as accumulation, per crypto.news.

The derivatives footprint is murkier. In a September snapshot, Onchain Lens attributed $126.25 million in Hyperliquid shorts to a Wintermute-linked address, split across $46.92 million in ETH, $11.30 million in SOL and $10.03 million in HYPE, per Crypto Economy. Wintermute has not confirmed ownership of that address. Attribution like this is a working hypothesis, not a fact.

Spot accumulation off exchange combined with perp shorts on a transparent venue is also a common hedge structure. Part of a net short reading on Hyperliquid can be delta hedging rather than a directional call. The difference only shows when you see whether those shorts get added to or closed into strength.

The Fed Window: October 28 and 29

The calendar compresses all of this into two days. Investors expect the Fed to hold rates at 3.75% to 4.00%, per Crypto Briefing, with rising inflation and resilient growth keeping another hike on the table for the coming months. September personal income and outlays and the advance Q3 GDP estimate follow on October 29 at 8:30 a.m. ET, per crypto.news.

Analyst levels from earlier in the month frame the reaction. Bitget Wallet research lead Lacie Zhang named $82,000 as a downside threshold and $87,500 as a recovery trigger in an October 1 assessment, and said a sustained move below $80,000 would invalidate her bullish seasonal setup, according to the same crypto.news report. Price has been trading right on that line.

What to Watch on the Tape Around the Fed

Three signals separate a whale short that works from one that gets squeezed.

First, CVD against price around the Fed print. If price lifts toward $85,000 while aggressive buy volume does not confirm, the move is shorts covering into thin books, and the $86,500 to $87,500 sell block is likely to cap it. If CVD leads price higher, that is fresh demand, and the $87,000 cluster becomes a target.

Second, funding direction. Funding sliding negative while price holds flat means shorts are paying to stay in, and that pressure compounds every hour.

Third, the whale positions themselves. The Buildix whale tracker follows large Hyperliquid wallets and their position changes, and the BTC pair view puts CVD, OBI and VPIN on one screen. A VPIN spike while whale shorts add size is a different setup from VPIN spiking while the same wallets cut.

The whales who bought the March low are now betting the other way. The next 48 hours will show whether their timing still holds.
