How Crypto Liquidation Works

When you open a leveraged perpetual futures position, your exchange calculates a liquidation price based on your entry price, leverage, and maintenance margin. If the market moves against you and hits this price, your position is automatically closed and your margin is lost.

Higher leverage means your liquidation price is closer to your entry. At 100x leverage on a long, a move of just ~1% against you triggers liquidation. At 10x, you have roughly 10% of room.

Liquidation Price Formula

For a long position: Liquidation Price = Entry × (1 - 1/Leverage + Maintenance Margin Rate)

For a short position: Liquidation Price = Entry × (1 + 1/Leverage - Maintenance Margin Rate)

Maintenance margin rates vary by exchange: Hyperliquid uses 0.5%, Binance 0.4-0.5%, and Bybit 0.5% for most pairs.

Avoiding Liquidation

Use lower leverage, set stop losses before your liquidation price, and monitor funding rates. When funding is extreme, it often signals an overcrowded trade that may move against the majority.

Buildix provides real-time liquidation maps showing where clusters of liquidations sit above and below the current price, helping you anticipate cascade events before they happen.
