Why Token Unlocks Matter

When locked tokens become tradeable, early investors and team members can sell. The actual impact depends on whether recipients dump immediately or hold. The highest-risk unlocks are those with a large percentage of total supply (TIA at 17.2% and EDGE at 13.8% are the most dangerous).

How to Detect Selling Pressure with Orderflow

The key metrics to watch during an unlock event:

CVD (Cumulative Volume Delta): If CVD turns sharply negative after the unlock timestamp, it confirms that new supply is hitting the market as sell orders. A negative CVD divergence (price stable but CVD dropping) is the earliest warning sign.

OBI (Order Book Imbalance): Watch for the ask side of the order book growing significantly larger than bids. An OBI below -0.25 means sell-side pressure is building in the book.

VPIN: A spike in VPIN above 0.35 (normalized) near an unlock event means informed traders are positioning — likely the unlocked token holders selling through algorithmic execution.

How to Trade It

The conservative approach: avoid holding positions through major unlock events unless you have a strong directional thesis. The aggressive approach: if orderflow confirms selling pressure (negative CVD + negative OBI + elevated VPIN), shorting into the unlock can be profitable.

On Buildix, you can track all these metrics in real-time for SUI, ENA, and other tokens across Hyperliquid, Binance, and Bybit.
