The Privacy Problem With Cloud AI

Every time you paste your trading positions, strategy logic, or orderflow analysis into ChatGPT or Claude, that data travels to servers owned by OpenAI or Anthropic. For most conversations, this is fine. But for trading-specific use cases, it raises legitimate concerns:

  • Your strategy ideas are processed and potentially stored on third-party servers
  • Your position data reveals your trading activity
  • Your risk parameters expose your account size and risk tolerance
  • If you're using AI to analyze alpha, that alpha might not stay private

For hobby traders, this is paranoia. For serious traders running unique strategies, it's a valid operational security concern.

What Is Ollama?

Ollama is an open-source tool that lets you run large language models locally on your own machine. Instead of sending queries to the cloud, the AI runs on your GPU or CPU. Your data never leaves your computer.

Popular models available through Ollama include Llama 3 (Meta), Mistral, Phi-3 (Microsoft), and many others. The quality gap with cloud models has narrowed significantly — for structured analytical tasks like orderflow interpretation, local models perform surprisingly well.

When to Use Cloud AI

Cloud models (GPT-4o, Claude Sonnet 4) are the right choice when you need the highest intelligence for complex reasoning: multi-step strategy development, nuanced risk analysis with many variables, or creative strategy brainstorming. The quality advantage of frontier models is real.

They're also the right choice when you're analyzing public data that carries no competitive edge — general market analysis, educational questions, or exploring concepts.

When to Use Local AI

Local models via Ollama are the right choice when:

  • You're analyzing your actual positions and don't want that data on cloud servers
  • You're testing proprietary strategy logic that represents genuine alpha
  • You trade during high-volatility events when cloud APIs might be overloaded
  • You want zero-latency access without network round-trips
  • You run many queries per day and want to avoid API costs

The Best of Both Worlds: BYOK

Most traders don't need to choose. The optimal setup is using cloud AI for general analysis and strategy development, then switching to local AI for live trading analysis with real position data.

Buildix supports both approaches through its AI Query Engine with BYOK (Bring Your Own Key). Six providers are supported: OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude), Google (Gemini), Groq, Mistral, and Ollama. You can switch between them freely.

Use Claude for deep strategy analysis during research hours. Switch to Ollama during live trading when you're feeding real position data and want zero data leakage. Same interface, same data integration, different backend.
