Launch Free Terminal →The EWZ perp on Hyperliquid fell as much as 27% on Sunday night, hours before any Brazilian or U.S. stock exchange opened, after Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won Brazil's presidential runoff, according to TokenPost. The contract tracks the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF (EWZ), runs under HIP-3 and is deployed by trade.xyz, per Crypto Briefing.
When the cash market opened Monday, it confirmed the move. The Ibovespa fell as much as 17.34% and triggered a 30-minute circuit breaker, per TokenPost. Overnight, one of the few live, tradable dollar prices for Brazilian equities was a perp carrying roughly $15 million of open interest.
How the EWZ Perp Priced the Brazil Election Before Markets Opened
Positioning into the vote leaned the other way. Before Sunday, the EWZ perp rose to about $45.16, roughly 6% above the ETF's Friday close of $42.59, per Crypto Briefing. Polymarket had briefly priced Flávio Bolsonaro at an 80% chance of winning, according to TechFlow.
As results came in, the perp tracked the prediction markets in real time. Market commentary on X cited by Crypto Briefing shows the contract falling from about $46 to $42.58 as Kalshi's implied Bolsonaro probability dropped from about 80% to 30%. That first leg erased the pre-election premium before the result was even final.
The final count, per Brazil's Superior Electoral Court, gave Lula 51.79% of valid votes against 48.21% for Bolsonaro, according to TokenPost. It was the first time since 1989 that a candidate who finished second in the first round won the runoff, per Invezz. The second leg of the selloff came after confirmation.
EWZ Perp Liquidations on a $15 Million Book
The size of the book matters as much as the size of the move. Open interest in the EWZ perp dropped from about $15.42 million to $8.95 million during the selloff, then recovered to roughly $13.96 million, according to TokenPost. That is a 42% flush of open interest in one session, followed by most of it being rebuilt.
The largest single hit was a long of about $1.62 million, liquidated at 8:05 p.m. ET on Sunday, for a loss of $152,300, per the same TokenPost report. In the latest snapshot the contract traded at $34.276, down 23.11% over 24 hours, on about $55.29 million of turnover. Turnover ran at roughly 3.6 times the pre-selloff open interest, a sign that the move was traded hard rather than drifting on an empty book.
Both sides of the trade showed up in the wallet data. Two accounts held a combined $2.08 million of shorts opened within 10 minutes of the election result, and one account opened a $995,800 long at an average entry of $34.66 after the drop, according to TokenPost. The shorts were early event traders. The long was a bet that the perp had overshot the cash market.
EWZ Perp vs the Real ETF: How Close Was the Weekend Price
The cash market opened near where the perp had already gone. EWZ traded around $31.83 in premarket, 25.3% below Friday's close, dipped below $30 after the open, then recovered to about $33.60, still down about 21% on the day, per Crypto Briefing. Invezz reported a premarket drop of more than 27%, and a Tokyo-listed Ibovespa ETF fell 15% during Asian hours.
In Brazil, the Ibovespa hit an intraday low of 169,516.43, 17.34% below the prior close of 205,082.56, and closed at 176,608.23, down 13.88%. The dollar rose 8.25% against the real to R$5.40, according to TokenPost. Crypto Briefing, citing InfoMoney, called it the sharpest daily percentage drop since 1998.
Put side by side, the perp's maximum drawdown of about 27% sat in the same range as the ETF's premarket low, and its $34.276 snapshot sat close to where EWZ traded after the open. A contract with less than $16 million of open interest landed within a few dollars of a market that reopened with the full weight of institutional flow behind it.
Reading Weekend Orderflow on HIP-3 Equity Perps
The EWZ case shows a pattern that will repeat on any event that lands while the underlying is closed. HIP-3 deployers set their own market definitions and oracle prices, per Hyperliquid's documentation as summarized by crypto.news. When the reference market is shut, the perp's order book carries the price discovery on its own, and thin depth amplifies every market order.
Three things are worth tracking when that happens. First, the open interest path: a flush followed by a fast rebuild, as on EWZ, means new positions are being opened at the new level rather than traders stepping away. Second, the gap between the perp and the last cash close, which is the market's live estimate of the opening gap. Third, which wallets add size after the first liquidation wave, because that is where the next squeeze or continuation comes from.
There are limits to how far a weekend print can be trusted. With open interest in the low eight figures, a few accounts can move the price, and the reports cited here give no data on book depth at the low. The signal is the direction and the size of the gap, not the exact print.
What to Watch on EWZ and Other HIP-3 Equity Perps
The next test is whether the EWZ perp holds its new open interest now that the ETF trades again during U.S. hours. If open interest drifts back toward the pre-election $15 million while price stabilizes, the weekend traders are staying for the fiscal story that investors are now watching, including Lula's choice of finance minister, per TokenPost.
On Buildix, the whale tracker follows large Hyperliquid accounts, including positions on HIP-3 markets, so wallets like the post-drop EWZ long can be watched as they add or cut. The screener flags open interest and funding shifts across HIP-3 equity perps, which is where the next weekend gap will show up first.
Brazil was not a crypto event, but the first venue to price it was a crypto order book. The next time a macro shock lands on a Sunday, the Hyperliquid tape is where the opening gap will be visible first.
