Chip Stock Perps Weekend Liquidations: $51.6M in 10 Minutes, Started by a $2M Binance Exit — Published by Buildix, a crypto orderflow analytics platform with real-time VPIN, CVD and whale tracking on the 100 most liquid Hyperliquid pairs.

Chip stock perps lost about $51.6 million to liquidations in ten minutes on Saturday, with U.S. stock markets closed. Per CoinGlass data cited by Crypto Briefing, about $38.1 million of that, or 73.8%, came from longs. ChainCatcher places the window between 21:22 and 21:32 UTC, and several outlets reported it in Beijing time as 05:22 to 05:32 on October 18.

The cause, according to the trade by trade breakdown that followed, was not news. It was a roughly $2 million exit on Binance hitting thin weekend books, followed within seconds by fresh shorts on Hyperliquid. For anyone trading equity perps around the clock, this is the clearest case so far of what weekend orderflow looks like when there is no reference market underneath.

Chip Stock Perps Liquidations by Ticker

The KuCoin flash report, relaying BlockBeats and CoinGlass, gives the split: about $12.73 million on SOXL, the 3x daily semiconductor bull ETF, $10.85 million on SanDisk (SNDK), $10.72 million on SK Hynix contracts, $9.07 million on SOXS and $4.40 million on Micron (MU). The five tickers add up to about $47.8 million, so roughly $3.8 million of the total is not itemized.

Shorts were not spared. KuCoin puts short liquidations at about $13.53 million, which fits with SOXS, the inverse product, showing up near the top of the list. A move sharp enough to liquidate both sides of the same theme in ten minutes is a liquidity event more than a directional one.

The backdrop was already weak. Blockonomi notes semiconductors had logged eight straight losing days, the worst streak since 2008, and ChainCatcher points to a volatile week for memory chip stocks on new competition from Chinese chipmaker CXMT. Blockonomi also reports that prices rebounded quickly afterward, without giving figures.

The Sequence: Binance First, Hyperliquid Within Seconds

The most useful detail comes from Tread.fi CEO DYJ, whose analysis TokenPost summarized. DYJ linked the selloff to a trader's roughly $2 million SanDisk long exit on Binance and blamed the first leg on "thin order-book depth".

The timeline is measured in seconds. About $407,000 of SNDK traded on Binance in the first second and about $1.03 million in the next, when MU selling also started. Then about 10 Hyperliquid addresses placed immediate or cancel sell orders across SNDK, SOXL, DRAM, SKHX, SKHY and MU within 1.8 seconds, followed by a second synchronized round. DYJ said these were new shorts, not existing longs reducing.

In the first minute of concentrated selling, TokenPost reports about $21.9 million of SNDK and $5.1 million of MU on Binance, against about $3.1 million of SNDK and $300,000 of MU on trade.xyz. Hyperliquid MU volume then printed $10.8 million and $9.5 million across two minutes, which DYJ attributed to cascading liquidations.

Why Weekend Equity Perps Move on Their Own

On a weekday, an equity perp has an anchor: the stock trades on its home exchange and arbitrage pulls the perp back toward it. On a weekend that anchor is gone. ChainCatcher notes that with U.S. markets closed these contracts had no live stock price to reference, so traders were only trading against each other.

Trade.xyz rules, as ChainCatcher describes them, let the platform set reference prices on its own until external quotes resume when U.S. stocks open on Monday. That makes the weekend price a product of the perp book itself. If the book is thin, a few million dollars of aggressive selling can move it far enough to hit stops and liquidation levels that would never be reached against a live underlying.

The cross venue element adds speed. A sell burst on one exchange was answered on another inside two seconds by accounts opening shorts, not closing longs. That is coordinated aggressive flow looking for a cascade, and it found one.

What This Says About Liquidation Risk on Stock Perps

Three things stand out. First, the size needed to start the move was small relative to the damage: a roughly $2 million exit preceded $51.6 million of liquidations. Second, the liquidations were spread across correlated tickers, so a position in one chip name was exposed to selling in another. Third, both sides got hit, which is what happens when price travels far in both directions on a thin book.

For traders holding equity perps through a weekend, the practical lesson is about where liquidation levels sit relative to visible depth, not about direction. A level that looks safe against Friday's close can be inside the range a thin weekend book can travel in a minute.

What to watch:

  • Book depth on Hyperliquid equity perps on Saturday and Sunday versus weekdays. When depth drops, the same size moves price further.
  • Aggressor flow across correlated tickers at the same time. Synchronized IOC selling across SNDK, MU and SOXL is a signature, not noise.
  • CVD against open interest during the move. Falling price with rising open interest is new shorts arriving. Falling open interest with a CVD spike is liquidations clearing.
  • The Monday open. Blockonomi points out that Monday is when actual share prices show how far the weekend contract prices drifted.

Tracking Weekend Flow on Buildix

The Buildix screener ranks Hyperliquid markets by CVD, open interest change and order book imbalance, so a synchronized burst across several related tickers stands out on one list instead of six charts. The whale tracker follows large wallets and their open positions, which is how a group of addresses opening the same short in the same seconds becomes visible.

Weekend equity perps trade a real book with no live underlying behind it. The liquidations on Saturday showed how little size it takes to test that book, and how quickly the test spreads across every ticker in the same theme.
