Bitfinex Seizure Bitcoin Moved: 12,267 BTC Left the Wallet but None Hit an Exchange — Published by Buildix, a crypto orderflow analytics platform with real-time VPIN, CVD and whale tracking on the 100 most liquid Hyperliquid pairs.

A US government-linked wallet moved 12,267 BTC, worth about $1.01 billion, out of the Bitfinex seizure wallet on October 8, according to Arkham data reported by CoinDesk. No exchange deposit was recorded. The same two days also saw $729 million leave US spot bitcoin ETFs, which turned a custody move into a live question about Bitcoin supply overhang.

For a trader, the useful question is not whether the government is selling. It is what sequence of on-chain and orderflow signals would confirm a sale before the price does.

What the Bitfinex Seizure Wallet Transfer Shows

The coins left a wallet holding funds tied to the 2016 Bitfinex hack and went to a new, unlabeled address, with a second, smaller transaction to a different address, CoinDesk reported. Crypto Briefing timed the transfer at 9:33 a.m. Eastern and said the second wallet received about 0.0012 BTC, which SpendNode described as a likely test transaction.

The 12,267 BTC are part of roughly 94,000 BTC seized in 2022 from Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan, per Crypto Briefing. SpendNode reported that the Justice Department and US Marshals Service did not comment. Its list of possible explanations includes custody consolidation, restitution staging for Bitfinex or its users, and reserve preparation, none of them confirmed.

A test transaction followed by a large transfer to a fresh address is a common custody pattern. It is not, by itself, evidence of distribution.

What matters for positioning is that the coins are now one hop closer to a decision. A wallet that has sat untouched carries no near-term supply risk. A freshly funded address controlled by the same owner can reach an exchange or an OTC desk in a single transaction, so the market tends to price a small risk premium until the next move is visible on-chain.

The Coinbase Prime Flows the Day Before

The October 8 transfer did not happen in isolation. On October 7, wallets tied to the FTX/Alameda and Bitfinex seizures sent roughly 3,200 BTC (about $264 million) plus $119 million in USDT to Coinbase Prime deposit addresses, per Arkham data cited by CoinDesk. Crypto Briefing gives a different figure for that leg, about 2,574 BTC worth $215 million, routed through intermediary addresses.

Coinbase Prime offers custody as well as execution, so a deposit there does not confirm a sale, both outlets note. CoinDesk also points to a July 2026 precedent in which about $288 million of seized bitcoin and ether was routed to Coinbase Prime through intermediary wallets.

The policy backdrop cuts against selling. A March 2025 executive order directs forfeited bitcoin into a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve that is not meant to be sold, CoinDesk reported. SpendNode adds that it is not confirmed whether that order governs these specific coins. Arkham still shows the government holding about $25.5 billion in crypto, per CoinDesk, and Crypto Briefing cites an Arkham estimate of about 306,795 BTC.

ETF Outflows and the October 8 Selloff

The supply story landed on a market that was already losing spot demand. US spot bitcoin ETFs saw outflows of $484.9 million on October 7 and $244.1 million on October 8, a two-day total of $729.0 million, according to Farside data cited by FinanceFeeds. IBIT led Wednesday at minus $207.7 million and FBTC led Thursday at minus $197.1 million.

The price drop came hours after the transfer, not alongside it. Per FinanceFeeds, Binance BTCUSDT printed lows of $80,914.23 in the 15:00 UTC hour, $80,800.95 at 16:00 and $80,393.56 at 17:00, on $533.3 million of combined quote volume, about 33.7% of the day's Binance turnover. FinanceFeeds links the move to a post by President Trump on Iran at 16:17 UTC. The 9:33 a.m. Eastern transfer corresponds to 13:33 UTC, about 90 minutes before the first of those hours.

The same report notes MARA moved about 996 BTC ($81.13 million) to an address tied to Galaxy Digital, also with no confirmed sale. Two large holders moving coins on the same day makes headlines. It does not make a trend. The market reaction itself was muted: SpendNode put bitcoin near $81,827 at the time of the transfer, down about 2% on the day, with the Fear and Greed Index at a neutral 56.

Orderflow Signals That Would Confirm a Sale

A transfer becomes supply only when coins meet a bid. That leaves a trail that shows up in a specific order:

  • Exchange or OTC deposit. A move from the new unlabeled address into a labeled exchange deposit or a known OTC desk address is the first real tell. Until then, the coins are parked.
  • Spot CVD on the receiving venue. If the coins land at a US venue, watch cumulative volume delta on that venue's BTC spot pair. Steady negative spot CVD with a flat or rising perp basis is the classic footprint of a seller working an order.
  • Spot to perp divergence. Persistent selling in spot while perp funding stays positive means the derivatives crowd is still long into the supply, which raises the odds of a long liquidation cascade if spot keeps leaning.
  • Open interest behavior. Aggregate open interest fell 1.9% to $27.1 billion with funding near 5% annualized, per CoinDesk data cited by FinanceFeeds. A sale absorbed while open interest climbs would point to shorts positioning ahead of the flow.

On Buildix, the screener and the BTC pair view show CVD, OBI and volume profile next to each other, so you can see whether aggressive selling is actually building or the headline is doing all the work. The whale tracker covers the perp side on Hyperliquid, where large positions are public.

A billion dollars of bitcoin changed address on Thursday. Whether it changes hands will show up in the tape before it shows up in a court filing.
