Bitcoin CPI Positioning: Options Price a 4.4% Week While Perp Open Interest Stays Flat — Published by Buildix, a crypto orderflow analytics platform with real-time VPIN, CVD and whale tracking on the 100 most liquid Hyperliquid pairs.

Bitcoin CPI positioning heading into Wednesday's print is split between two markets that are telling different stories. On Deribit, puts outnumber calls by 43% on the October 16 expiry, yet seven day implied volatility has fallen to 32.01% from about 34.5% a week earlier, according to CryptoSlate. In perps, open interest has barely moved since the October 8 flush. The September CPI report lands on October 14 at 12:30 UTC, and the way spot, perps and options react in the first hour will say more than the headline number.

What the Options Book Is Pricing for CPI

The October 16 Deribit expiry holds about 15,502 BTC, roughly $1.29 billion of notional, with 9,128 BTC in puts and 6,373 BTC in calls, for a put to call ratio of 1.43, per CryptoSlate. Max pain sits at $83,000, close to the $83,450 spot reference used in that snapshot.

The downside strikes are where the size is. Put open interest stands at about $188 million at $80,000, $162 million at $78,000 and $101 million at $76,000, a combined $451 million or nearly 35% of the expiry. Calls between $85,000 and $90,000 add up to about $219 million.

Read that with care. Digital Today notes that put open interest includes premium selling, so a large put strike is not automatically a bearish bet. What is clearer is the volatility surface: the seven day 25 delta skew moved from +1.98 to minus 2.40 over the week per CryptoSlate, a flip that points to more demand for short dated downside protection than for upside. Using seven day implied volatility, CryptoSlate estimates a one standard deviation weekly move of about 4.4%, or roughly $3,700, a range of $79,750 to $87,150.

Perp Open Interest and Funding Into the Print

Perps have not rebuilt since the sell-off. Bitcoin perpetual open interest is down 1.9% over the week to about $29.33 billion, with annualized funding at 5.6%, according to Laevitas data cited by CryptoSlate.

The Bitfinex Alpha report from October 12 gives the same picture from a different angle. Perp open interest measured in BTC fell about 3% during the drop, kept falling during the first rebound as shorts took profit, and has not been rebuilt. Annualized funding compressed from about 6.7% on October 5 to neutral levels into the weekend. Bitfinex described the bounce from the $80,347 low back above $83,000 as spot led rather than driven by new perp positions.

That matters for how the print can play out. A market that goes into a macro event with flat open interest and near neutral funding has less forced selling stacked under it than one that goes in crowded. The risk shifts from a long liquidation cascade to fresh positioning opened on the number itself.

Liquidations Show Where the Last Move Hurt

Monday's session is a reminder of how one sided the flow still is when price slips. In the 24 hours to about 7:30 PM EDT on October 12, liquidations totaled $488.61 million across 118,142 traders, with longs at $406.48 million or 83.2%, according to CoinGlass data reported by Bitcoin.com News. ETH led at $115.19 million, ahead of BTC at $106.61 million, and Binance accounted for 52.3% of the total. The largest single liquidation was a $9.65 million BTC long on Binance, executed at $81,772.

The levels around that print line up with the options strikes. Bitfinex flags $81,300, the former range high, as support, with resistance at $84,000 to $84,500 and the average spot ETF cost basis at $84,340. It also places short positions between $86,500 and $87,300, close to the top of CryptoSlate's one standard deviation range.

What the CPI Consensus Looks Like

Previews do not agree to the decimal. CryptoSlate, citing MarketWatch, puts the expected headline at about 3.7% year on year, up from 3.4% in August, with core at +0.2% month on month. Bitfinex has the headline at 3.6% and frames the core reading as the deciding number: 0.2% or less would lower rate expectations, while 0.3% or more would keep pressure on spot buying.

The rate backdrop is why the print carries weight. The US 30 year Treasury yield hit 5.70%, its highest since 2002, according to TechFlow. Bitfinex reports markets pricing about a 20% chance of an October hike and about 70% by December, while Laevitas data cited by CryptoSlate puts the December probability around 85%. The FOMC meets October 27 and 28.

How to Read the First Hour on Orderflow

Three things separate a real move from a reflex. First, whether spot or perps lead: if CVD on spot rises while perp CVD lags, buyers are paying with cash, which is how Bitfinex described the last rebound. If perp CVD runs ahead with open interest climbing, the move is being built on margin and can reverse when funding catches up.

Second, the open interest response. A break below $81,300 with open interest falling is longs being closed. The same break with open interest rising is new shorts, and those would sit directly above the $76,000 to $80,000 put strikes.

Third, liquidation clusters. On Buildix, buildix.trade/pair/BTC shows CVD, open interest and order book imbalance on one screen, and the liquidation map shows where forced closes are stacked. Watching those from 12:30 UTC onward tells you which side is being forced out and which side is choosing to trade.

Options have priced a quieter week than the last one. Perps have cleared enough that the next large move will be driven by new positions, and those are visible as they open.
